Sidi Bennour City owes its name to Imam Abou Yannour Adballah Ben Wakris Doukkali, whose tomb lies at the exit of the city, and is considered the second stronghold of Moroccan Sufism. According to some historians, it is adjacent to Moshtaray, an old city dating back to 500 BC, considered among the oldest cities of North Africa.
Sidi Bennour has, since ages, duly played the role of agricultural pole hosting the biggest national weekly market and being the first supplier of vegetables and meats to neighboring regions, needless to mention its ascendency in sugar production, being the first producer thereof nationwide.
